Nasal Congestion

Nasal Congestion is a very common ENT compliant. This causes decreased airflow through the nose. This can affect quality of life and also contribute to sleep disorders like snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. There are many things that can cause nasal congestion, including infections (common colds, the flu, sinusitis), inflammation , allergies, anatomical abnormalities (deviated nasal septum, nasal polyps or nasal tumors, enlarged turbinates, enlarged adenoids, and nasal valve collapse), and medications, just to name a few.

Before seeing your ENT provider, put together a list of things you have tried for nasal congestion and if anything has helped. When you see your ENT provider, they will take a careful history and physical exam. To evaluate this issue, your ENT provider will perform a nasal endoscopy. This will allow a better evaluation of the inside of your nose than what can be done in a primary care setting.

Medications may be prescribed and imaging may be ordered. If allergies are suspected, testing may be recommended.

Sometimes surgery is indicated. This may include septoplasty, turbinate reduction, sinus surgery, rhinoplasty, and/or nasal valve repair.

Your provider will discuss your treatment options with you at your appointment.
